Emerging Writers Scholarship

The Emerging Writers Scholarship is open to high school seniors and new incoming transfer students who have been admitted to North Central College and who are potential Literature, Writing and/or English Education majors. Students may submit either an original creative work or an original literary interpretation.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The scholarship is open to incoming First-Year and incoming Transfer students who will be enrolled full-time and aspire to be a Literature, Writing or English Education major.
  • Students must submit either one short essay of literary criticism, one short story or two-three poems.
  • Submissions should not exceed 2,000 words and must be original and unpublished.
  • If selected to receive the scholarship, and in addition to the scholarship, selected writing submissions will be reviewed by a scholarship committee comprised of faculty from the Literature, Writing and English Education departments and from published professors and may be considered for publication in 30 North. The 30 North publication is a national annual that publishes the best writing by undergraduate creative writers.

RENEWAL:
The Emerging Writers Scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years of undergraduate study provided the student continues to progress toward and declares a Literature, Writing and/or English Education major and maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA. Renewal recommendations will be confirmed with the Literature, Writing and English Education departments.

  1. Are you hoping to major in Literature, in Writing or in English Education?
  2. Is your current cumulative GPA equal to or greater than 3.000? (Incoming first-year students please use high school GPA; Incoming transfer students please use previous college/university cumulative GPA.)
  3. Submit either ONE short essay of literary criticism, ONE short story, or TWO-THREE poems for consideration. Work should not exceed 2,000 words and must be original and unpublished. Include your first and last name, current year in school, home address, phone number and email address at the top of your work.
