Hearst Foundation Make A Difference Scholarship

The Hearst Foundation Make A Difference Scholarship was established to offer financial assistance to minority students who live in the Chicago Metro area or areas that have minority populations in the State of Illinois.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Financial assistance for minority students
  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen
  • Applicant must be a resident of Illinois
  • Applicant must be a full time North Central student
  • Incoming first-year, transfer, and continuing undergraduate students eligible
  • Applicant must maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA
  • Volunteer work is required as detailed below:
  1. If you are a first-year student, we do not expect you to begin volunteering during your first semester; however, in keeping with the intent of the scholarship you will be required to volunteer for an activity for at least 15 hours during the spring semester.
  2. For students currently enrolled at North Central, in keeping with the intent of the scholarship, you will be required to volunteer for an activity that takes a minimum of 15 hours per semester or at least 30 hours per academic year.

This scholarship is not automatically renewable.

  3. Please provide a list of your recent volunteer experiences. If you are a new applicant, please list recent volunteer experiences prior to enrolling at North Central College. If you are a continuing student re-applying for the scholarship, please include volunteer experiences since enrolling at North Central as well.
  4. Please provide a written statement of your current volunteer experience. Include in your statement, how and why you became involved; why you should be selected as a scholarship recipient; and what volunteer activities you would like to be involved in while receiving the scholarship. If you currently have no volunteer experience, please explain the reason and include what volunteer activities you would like to be involved in if selected to receive the scholarship.
  5. By answering "Yes" to this question, I understand, if selected as a recipient, I will be expected to volunteer at least 30 hours per academic year and will work closely with the Office of Faith and Action at North Central College to seek placement in a volunteer position or to record volunteer service that is done outside of the North Central College community. (Please note that recipients who are first-year students are exempt from the volunteer requirement during your first semester. However, in keeping with the intent of the scholarship, you will be expected to volunteer for at least 15 hours during the spring semester.)
