Dr. Jacob Sackmann Endowed Scholarship for Peacemaking
The Dr. Jacob Sackmann Endowed Scholarship for Peacemaking has been established by Richard and Janis (Fellers) Peacock, graduating class of 1969.
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to two (2) students who meet the criteria of the scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum 2.0 Grade Point Average.
- Open to undergraduate, full-time students who are currently attending North Central College.
- Applicants must be interested in Peacemaking, and the ideal candidates will have either studied, participated in, or plans to pursue a career in any one of the following:
– Religious Studies (e.g., ministry, interfaith understanding, just peacemaking)
– Political Science (e.g., international relations, global studies, diplomacy)
– Sociology (e.g., the student has volunteered or plans to volunteer in the United States or a developing country working with refugees, victims of genocide, humanitarian relief)
– Education (e.g., urban teaching in an environment that addresses issues of violence); and/or
– Conflict Resolution, Mediation or Model UN - Applicants must complete an ESSAY that is no longer than two (2) double-spaced pages that identifies the reasons why they are interested in Peacemaking.
Peacemaking includes:
- Understanding the causes of conflict, violence, and war;
- Developing ways to prevent and resolve war, genocide, terrorism, and violations of human rights;
- Building policies, systems, and societies characterized by conflict resolution, justice, freedom, and sustainability; and
- Sustaining motivation for organizing for justice, peace, reconciliation, and a livable planet.
